Americans have long since observed Thanksgiving as a day of gratitude, followed by Black Friday’s consumership. We host school plays and events celebrating the peaceful relationship between indigenous peoples and early American settlers. However, there is a dark side to the celebrated Thanksgiving that rarely goes acknowledged. This talk examines the historical events of the first Thanksgiving, and also highlights the ways in which the story of Christopher Columbus has been watered down and celebrated in our country’s narrative.
