We set cards to expire after certain lengths of time.  A brand-new library card expires after three months when it needs to be renewed to regular patron status.  (New patrons are allowed to check out eight items, regular patrons have unlimited checkouts.)  Regular patron cards expire every three years.  When your card expires, staff can update it by simply confirming your current contact information.
