Emma, a young widow, has to overcome past trauma & legal restrictions to work at a library, in order to take care of her young daughter. When her daughter has to leave Nottingham to escape the Blitz, Emma is faced with more trauma. What gets her, & the others around her, through it are the complex friendships & relationships that develop. I really enjoyed the historical aspects of this book, as it really made the book come alive.
